Protect Yourself

Patients at continued risk for Hepatitis C and/or HIV should schedule regular screenings. Different demographic and lifestyle factors contribute to a patient’s risk of developing these conditions, such as:

  • Transgender and Black women
  • Men who sleep with men
  • Injection drug users
  • Have sex partner(s) living with Hepatitis C and/or HIV
  • Have sex partner(s) with unknown Hepatitis C and/or HIV status
  • Sex workers
  • Have had other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), hepatitis, or tuberculosis (TB)

“Hepatitis C and HIV treatment is so much simpler, more tolerable, and more effective than the medications that were available in the past. To think that Hepatitis C can be cured in as little as 8 weeks is remarkable. Though HIV is not curable, treatment of HIV infection and prevention with PrEP will allow those living with HIV to lead healthy lives and will decrease the risk of HIV infection in the community.” – Rachel DeMita, M.D.

Treatment Services

Lower Lights Health specialty pharmacy services facilitate patient access to affordable medications to treat their condition.

  • Hepatitis C treatment can cure the infection in most patients. Treatment typically involves 8 to 12 weeks of daily medication, and it is critical to take these medications consistently for the best results. After treatment is completed, a lab test is needed to ensure the virus is no longer detected in the bloodstream.
  • HIV can be treated with daily medications. There is no cure for HIV, but medications control the disease and prevent disease progression. Lab tests are needed periodically to monitor the disease.
  • PrEP options to reduce HIV infection include oral and injectable medications to meet each patient’s needs. Lab tests are needed periodically to ensure a patient does not develop HIV.
