Jubilee Market and Cafe — the Market With A Purpose
Lower Lights Christian Health Center opened the long-awaited Jubilee Market on Wednesday, May 16 at 1160 West Broad Street in Franklinton.
The 4,500 sq. ft. non-profit grocery store is the latest addition to the “full-family health care” services provided by Lower Lights Christian Health Center.
“Having access to affordable, nutritious food is a key component of a healthy lifestyle and preventing and treating many chronic conditions such as diabetes and heart disease”, says Tracy Cloud, Interim CEO. Franklinton has been without a grocery store for years, leaving residents who do not have transportation to rely on corner stores, gas stations and fast food restaurants to feed their families.
“We are so thankful to those in our extended community who recognize this need and have generously contributed towards bringing this vision to fruition. This project was the visionary dream of LLCHC’s founder, Dr. Dana Vallangeon”, says Ann Schiele, Chief Strategy Officer.
The grocery and cafe are part of the renovated former Anthony Thomas Candy factory at the corner of Yale and West Broad. The $1.7 million renovation and construction project had a $1 million initial fundraising goal, towards which $797,475 has been raised to date. Donations will be sought on an ongoing basis to enable the grocery store to continue to provide nutritious food at affordable prices.
Jubilee Market and Cafe welcomes Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. Customers under 100% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) are eligible to receive a 20% discount on fresh produce, and customers between 100% and 200% FPL are eligible to receive a 15% discount on fresh produce. These discounts exclude prepared items.
Community members wishing to apply for the produce discount program need to schedule a short financial appointment by calling (614)274-1455, option 1.
Lower Lights has enlisted Graze Columbus as its cafe partner. The cafe will offer a freshly prepared menu as well as take-home ready-to-serve options. Jubilee Market and Cafe’s regular operating hours will be Monday through Friday 8am – 7pm and Saturday/Sunday Noon – 5pm. Made-to-order cafe hours are 11am-2pm weekdays.
